| | 1-2pm The Return of Sgt. Rock with Billy Tucci It was an honor to be able to attend this panel and meet Lieutenant Colonel Eliel Archilla and hear his stories from WWII. Tucci, in Sgt Rock, is telling the story about the Lost Battalion. They were trapped in the French forests during the horrendous winter of 1944. LTC Archilla was one of the pilots that volunteered to fly over the men and drop supplies to them. He did this in weather so inhospitable that the entire 9th Army Air Force was grounded. LTC Archilla is a real hero. After the panel I went to Billy's table and thanked Mr. Archilla for telling us his story and for his service, and shook his hand. He has a heck of a grip for an 84 year old man. 2-3pm Wizard School: Drawing Covers with Marko Djurdjevic At the last moment, Marko had to leave, so Lee Bermejo substituted for him. I was a little disappointed because Marko does a lot of his work digitally, and since I'm trying to learn to do that, I would have loved to see his demonstration. Marko was noticed (I believe) by Marvel after they saw his work in some of the tutorials he has posted on Conceptart.org. Bermejo was a worthy replacement and gave a great lesson. After talking a little about his philosophy on covers, the Wizard moderator, Kevin Mahadeo, asked me to name my favorite villain. I chose Luthor because I knew that Bermejo could depict him well. The moderator then asked another attendee to give the story and they said "Luthor finally kills Superman". Bermejo then took us through the process of coming up with three different concepts for cover (thumbnails) and then choosing the best concept and carrying it forward to a detailed layout. To cap off another excellent day, I picked up my Captain America Commission from Mitchell. Isn't it beautiful? I'd recommend keeping your eye on Mitchell Breitweiser - I expect him to be one of comics' biggest names in a few years. Take a look at his website, here. And take a look at his wife's (Elizabeth) gallery at deviantart, here. |
