Review: Birds of Prey #125 - or leave Barbara Gordon alone!
Written by Tony Bedard; Art by Scott McDaniel and Andy Owens; Cover by Frank Quitely
| Gah. It looks like, knowing they've been canceled, the creative team just gave up. The art in this issue is mostly incoherent. The story is lackluster. But what upsets me most is the last panel where they imply that the next issue is about the chair. DC has also said that the book is being canceled because changes that will occur over the next few months would have left this title out of place. At the last couple of Wizard World conventions I've attended, Ethan van Sciver has, in the DC panel, mentioned the idea of bringing Barbara Gordon back as Batgirl. I despise that idea. First, there already is a Batgirl. Second, Barbara is not a girl, anymore. Third, there is also a Batwoman. Fourth, Barbara is paralyzed from the waist down. Yes, of course DC could find a way to restore her leg functionality - but should they? Heck no. That would be insulting to every reader with a disability. Barbara has shown that losing the ability to walk did not make her useless. In fact to the contrary, she has become more useful. As Batgirl she was a generic girl in spandex. As Oracle, she is one of the cleverest people in the DC universe. She's a force to be reckoned with and even Batman calls on her for help. To take all that away and put her back in spandex would be wrong. |
