Adventure Comics #0 B+
| Writer: Otto Binder Artist: Al Plastino |
Adventure Comics #0 is a reprint of the old Adventure Comics #247 plus one of the teaser "Origins & Omens" stories.
This is another example of DC's lack of competency when it comes to marketing themselves. Seriously, are these people asleep at the wheel? This comic, as a reprint is only $1. A great price to appeal to people that don't normally read comics. And what is the subject matter? It is the telling of the first meeting of young Clark Kent (Superboy)and the Legion of Superheroes founding members Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad, and Saturn Girl (yes, goofy names but this story was written inn 1958). Does this sound at all familiar? Yes - it is the same story that was retold in an episode of the CW's Smallville only three weeks ago.
Would it have been that hard for DC to schedule this to come out 3-4 weeks ago and to tie it into the Smallville episode - and maybe even get their parent company, Warner Brothers (the owners of CW and Smallville) to let them plug it in one of those little ads that plugs Warner Brothers music at the end of every episode of Smallville?
Sigh.
Anyway, you might be asking, how was the comic? As I mentioned, the story was published in 1958, so it is a little dated in its dialogue and tone, but it is fun and the art is nice. The general plot is that the three members of the Legion come back in time to meet Clark/Superboy, in Smallville. They then take him to the future and let him try out to join the Legion. It probably doesn't violate my story spoiling rules to say the kid does okay.
Origins & Omens is a thread that is running throughout DC's books, right now. They're brief teaser stories of events that will be seen in DC comics over the next year. They are told from the perspective of "Scar", a disfigured Guardian of the Universe. This one seems to be setting up a story for Lex Luthor and Brainiac - and the return of a deceased character.
