Review: Powers Volume 1 A-
| Writer: Brian Bendis Artist: Michael Avon Oeming |
I've been a big Brian Bendis fan since Ultimate Spider-man started. I've meant to get around to reading Powers for several years. Finally, I picked up this first trade paperback, including issues 1-6 some strips and a script, at Wizard World Texas, for half price. I got around to reading it, this week, and I'm now going to be looking for the next trade paperback.
Powers is the story of a police unit that investigates superhero/villain related crimes. The lead characters are homicide Detectives Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim. Christian used to be a superhero. After losing his powers he still felt the need to help, so he became a cop.
This first volume, titled "Who Killed Retro Girl?" brings Deena Pilgrim to the unit and has the duo investigating the murder of a super heroine with whom Christian used to team. It is obviously a Brian Michael Bendis book. That can be seen from the dialogue. The art is cartoony but very good. Michael Avon Oeming can take a panel and show it twice, but make a tiny change to the eyes and so much is revealed about what the character is thinking.
