Review: Locke & Key: Welcome to Lovecraft A
Writer: Joe Hill My friend, Corey, reviewed this title on his site, recently, giving it a rating of 5/5, which of course piqued my interest. The title of this first arc of a longer story is "Welcome to Lovecraft". That alone should give you an indication of what type of world you are entering when you read this book. If you aren't familiar with H.P. Lovecraft, you've missed out. He was the father of modern horror. In this book, Lovecraft is the name of a small town in Massachusetts. Within that town is a Victorian mansion called Key House. This volume tells the story of a mother and three children that endure a violent horror in San Francisco and move east, to Lovecraft to be with other family. They move into Key House. It is a magical or haunted place with many doors and many keys. The keys have powers to unlock places and things. |
IDW has made a video trailer for the comic:
At first I thought the art would be a little too cute or cartoony for the subject matter, but I was mistaken. Gabriel Rodriguez is a good visual storyteller and manages quite ably to depict horror. The writing is also impressive. Joe Hill is an award winning author (including winning the Bram Stoker award for his novel Heart-shaped Box.
I don't read a lot of horror comics. If I can find more like this one, that will change.
