Review: Star Trek: Crew #1 B+
| Writer: John Byrne Artist: John Byrne Publisher: IDW Price: $3.99 |
Those that have seen the original Star Trek television pilot "The Cage" or the two part episode "The Menagerie" that utilized footage from that pilot, will remember that before James T. Kirk was the captain of the Enterprise, her captain was Christopher Pike. Captain Pike had a female first officer only referred to as "Number One". She was played by Majel Barrett, later to become Majel Barrett Roddenberry. This new 6 issue miniseries from John Byrne appears to focus on that character.
It's eight years before the events of "The Cage". She is a young cadet, on her first mission, aboard a yet to be commissioned (cough Enterprise cough) starship. IDW hasn't revealed too much about the full mini-series, but since the first issue seems to pretty much be a done-in-one story, I'm assuming that each issue will be similar and will represent an event that brings the character to the level we know her.
Byrne has done his research - the book captures even the tiniest details to portray the look from that early pilot. Take a look at the picture of the starship, below. Very nice work. This issue was a lot of fun, and I am excited about what else the series may hold.
