Follow up:
Dear Billy is volume 2 of Garth Ennis' Battlefields stories. Volume 1 was Night Witches. The two stories are not related, other than being set in WWII, so you can still feel comfortable picking up this trade if you missed the first volume. This volume tells the love story of Carrie and Billy, a nurse and pilot, that meet and fall in love in the Asian theatre of WWII. This is more than just the story of two people that fall in love, however. It is the story of the damage that war can do to a person.
There really is very little I can say without giving away the plot. Suffice to say that as is expected with a book from Garth Ennis, this story shows human beings at their absolute worst and possibly at their best. It is both a romantic tale and a truly horrific story.
The art is from Danish artist, Peter Snejbjerg. The art fits the story very well. It manages to have both a light tone and a dark underside. The story is narrated as a letter from Carrie to Billy. The direction the story takes and the ending require some surprise, so Snejbjerg's choice to keep the art light was wise.
This story is a fairly quick read, the comic was three issues in length. It is a pretty powerful story, though, and maybe one of my favorite stories from Garth Ennis, and given his catalog, that is saying something.
