Even if the writing were bad, I would probably buy this comic for the art. It's beautiful. Fortunately, the writing isn't bad - it's good. Justice League has been in a long slump - this book and the news that James Robinson will be taking over writing duties on the core title hopefully means that slump will end.
The bad thing is that this story was supposed to come out last year and has already been mentioned as past tense in other books. The art delayed publication. The art is wonderfully detailed and textured. Each character looks truly iconic - in particular Green Lantern and Superman. Every page looks like the cover. The basic idea of the story is that it's been a bad few years. Some of the Justice League have (apparently) died (including Martian Manhunter and Batman). Hal Jordan is tired of waiting for the bad guys to do something wrong. He wants to go get them and pursue justice. As a Green Lantern he sees that as his responsibility. Much of the Justice League, including Superman, feel that the League has to stay on the right side of that moral line and view what Hal is saying as seeking vengeance, not justice. Hal is going to form a new league and the cover art gives some clues as to its members.
