Why is DC not capitalizing on Batman: Arkham Asylum?
| Over the last couple of weeks, I've had more than one person tell me they had so much fun playing Batman: Arkham Asylum that they want more Batman! These people are spending 40+ hours being Bruce Wayne and it is that experience they want to continue. Bruce is a very particular character and I would expect it to be confusing for people to play that game and then go buy a few comics and sit down to read them and find Dick Grayson (a completely opposite kind of person) in that role. |
Follow up:
There may always, or almost always, be some kind of media tie-in, but some are bigger than others. I don't have sales numbers for Batman: Arkham Asylum, but I do know that for several of the challenges, the leaderboard shows that 44000+ people have done better than me, on the PS3 server system. There are probably a lot of people (I hope) that have done worse than me, and the numbers for the Xbox360 and PC are probably even higher than the Sony numbers. This game has been highly anticipated and covered in the media for well over a year. It was hoped to be (and I think is now considered to be) THE definitive Batman video game - and DC was, from the credits, quite involved in its development. Paul Dini wrote it and the credits list him, Jim Lee, and several others and DC and Wildstorm as participants.
DC knew this game was coming and it seems, to me, that they should have capitalized on it. Almost every Marvel and DC comic book for the last couple of months has had a full page advertisement for the game - but I've seen no ads drawing attention to graphic novels/TPBs that feature some of the key characters from the game (Joker, Harley, Bane, Scarecrow, Riddler, Azsaz, and Killer Croc) - telling people that if they liked those characters, in the game, they can experience more of them in these books. Or heck, even a special reissue of the graphic novel, Arkham Asylum with a cover featuring art from the game.
