DC announces new line of Superman and Batman graphic novels
DC announced, today, a new line of Superman and Batman graphic novels called Superman: Earth One and Batman: Earth One. These books will be a modern look/retelling of the early years of the characters. The first two graphic novels have top tier creators assigned. J. Michael Straczynski and Shane Davis will be handling Superman and Geoff Johns and Gary Frank will be handling Batman.
Two key things stand out, from the announcement. The first is that the stories will be published as graphic novels. That has become quite rare. Usually stories are published first as monthly installments and then as a collected hardback and finally a collected trade paperback. In fact, when asked why Marvel doesn't do graphic novels, anymore, Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada responded that it doesn't make economic sense. The second is that these stories will be set on "Earth One" and have no connection to the continuity of the main line of books. It sounds like this is DC's take on what Marvel did with their "Ultimate Universe" but one step further by abandoning the monthly comic. I'm pretty excited to check these books out.The books should come out some time in 2010, just in time to for DC's big 75th anniversary celebrations. |
